I have hand-knotted wool and silk rugs over hardwood, not wall-to-wall. Do you clean those in the house?

Not usually, and that's the honest answer. A hand-knotted wool or silk rug cleaned in place on a hardwood floor sits in its own moisture, and the floor underneath doesn't forgive that. We take those rugs off-site to be washed flat, with the fringe handled separately, then returned. Machine-made rugs and lower-value flatweaves can sometimes be cleaned on site if the floor is protected. We look at the rug first and tell you which it is before anything gets wet.

My house is north of Sunset against the canyon and everything gets a fine dust film. Does that need different treatment?

It changes the emphasis. Hillside dust is dry, fine and mineral. It settles deep into wool pile rather than sitting on top like household soil. Dry soil removal before any wet cleaning does most of the work on those homes. Skip it and the dust turns to mud in the pile. Homes on that side of Sunset generally benefit from more frequent cleaning of stairs and bedrooms than flats-area houses, even when nothing looks stained.

What tends to go wrong with carpet and rugs in older Beverly Hills homes?

The two we see most are fringe damage and dye bleed. Fringe on hand-knotted rugs gets brittle and grey, and aggressive cleaning shears it off. Dye instability shows up in older wool and in silk, where a red or deep blue runs into an ivory field the moment it's over-wet. We test dye stability in an inconspicuous spot before spotting anything. The other one is stair carpet in the period-revival houses, where the wool wears at the nose of each tread and cleaning reveals wear that was always there.

Sometimes, for on-site work like bedroom carpet, a screening room, closets or stairs. Beverly Hills is a short drive for our crews. The dry climate here means plush wool and good nylon come back to usable fairly quickly, so a morning job is often walkable by evening. What we can't compress is off-site rug washing, which needs proper drying time and isn't something to rush before guests arrive. If a rug is part of the plan, call earlier in the week.
