What a carpet stretching visit involves

Furniture comes off the floor first. We pull the carpet free of the tack strip along one or two walls, usually the ones opposite the ripples. Then the power stretcher goes in, braced wall to wall, biting the carpet and pulling in stages across the room. A knee kicker only handles closets, corners, and short runs. Excess is trimmed with a wall trimmer and tucked back onto the strip.

Most buckling traces back to the original install being kicked, not power stretched. That shows up in postwar tracts with wall-to-wall nylon and polyester cut pile. Olefin and Berber loop in 1980s–2000s condos and apartments ripples along the loop rows and shows every wave. If the secondary backing has delaminated, stretching will not hold. We say so before starting.

With the carpet up, we look at the pad, the tack strip, and the subfloor. Pet urine wicking through pad into slab gets found here. Carpet glued straight to slab cannot be stretched at all. Seams sometimes need re-taping once tension changes.

Carpeted stairs and bedrooms with tile or LVP in living areas mean transition metal at doorways. Those get reset, not reused.
