With the marine layer, how long will my carpet take to dry?

Longer than it would inland, and we plan for that. Onshore flow and morning fog keep indoor humidity up, so a carpet that might dry in a few hours in the Valley can stay damp well past that here. We use low-moisture extraction passes and leave air movers running where it makes sense, and we'll tell you before we start how long we expect your rooms to be off-limits. If you can run a dehumidifier or crack windows once the afternoon clears, that helps. In closed-up pre-1970 apartments south of Wilshire with little cross-ventilation, we generally schedule earlier in the day so drying gets the whole afternoon.

My carpet smells musty even after cleaning. What's going on?

Usually one of two things. Either the carpet was cleaned with too much water and never fully dried in this humidity, so the backing and pad held moisture and odor came back, or there's an older stain or pet issue in the pad that surface cleaning never reached. Coastal homes are prone to the first. We check moisture in the pad, not just the face fiber, and if the odor is coming from underneath we'll say so rather than keep re-cleaning the top and charging you for it. Sometimes the honest answer is that a section of pad needs replacing.

Beach sand is everywhere in my carpet. Does regular cleaning get it out?

Sand is the main wear problem in this city. It works down past the tips and sits at the base of the pile where a household vacuum doesn't reach, and because it's abrasive it cuts fibers every time someone walks across it. Hot water extraction alone doesn't lift much of it, so we dry-agitate and do multiple slow vacuum passes before any moisture touches the carpet. Entry areas and hallways take the worst of it, along with the first few feet inside a door. If you're a block or two from the beach, expect to need cleaning more often than someone farther east. A good mat at the door reduces how much gets tracked in.

What does a cleaning run, and what changes the price?

We give a free estimate and a firm quote before anything gets moved or wet, so there's no adjusting the number afterward. What moves the price: total square footage, how many rooms versus stairs and hallways, the condition and fiber type, how much furniture needs moving, whether there's pet treatment or heavy sand loading, and access. A walk-up unit in an older Ocean Park building with no elevator and street parking takes more setup time than a ground-floor place with a driveway. Wool rugs and older delicate fibers are quoted separately from wall-to-wall synthetic.
